About Laura
Laura's background
Growing up on a family farm in Iowa as one of 7 children gave Laura a head start in learning to nurture, teach and care for her younger siblings. Reading books and telling stories had a great impact on her from a young age. She has been collecting and writing stories ever since she can remember and many of her unique experiences form the basis of her many humorous tales of life on the farm with her various friends and relatives. She received her teachers' certification from Iowa State and was soon a favorite student teacher to many young elementary school students. She accepted a position as a full-time school teacher in Omaha, Nebraska where she met her husband Leo and they went on to have three boys. Laura still continues to substitute-teach as she publishes her books for young readers.
Laura's writing roots
Throughout her life, Laura continued to pen new ideas for stories and began using her materials in the classroom. Many of her colleagues borrowed her stories and poems for their own classes and teachers and administrators alike encouraged her to get her work published. She began to seriously consider teaming up with an illustrator to publish the materials she knew to be powerful successes in the classroom. Her own family was creative, and could possibly draw the sketches...but would they have the time to devote to the project? Laura continued to weigh all the options.
Laura's team
As Laura was considering who to bring on as an illustrator, fate intervened. Her Art-major roommate, Robin O'Hara from Iowa State reached out and reconnected with Laura on facebook, and after decades of not being in touch, the two women found their bond of friendship was still just as strong! Robin had moved away from illustration into marketing and communications, but was hoping to devote more time to her art in retirement. When Laura asked if she would be interested in teaming on the books, Robin enthusiastically agreed! And the magic began!
